This is the painting I parted with yesterday. I was given a brief - specific colours and a New York theme, and that was it. Try as hard as I might I couldn't get the Chrysler Building and the Empire State out of my head right from the start - so improvised around that.
Customer delighted (phew).

ABSTRACT

BARCA BLUE 09/47 (2009)
acrylic on canvas
40cm x 40cm
£ 150.00 GBP (inc of p&p within UK)
I seem to have been neglecting my blog recently - mainly through having a short break and also working on the PlymSlackSpace project - so this is the start of me redressing the balance, and am hoping to be posting more work this week. This piece is intended for my solo show later this Summer - all of the pieces have a clear link and theme - but want to think of a name for the work collectively before I let people in on it.... have to maintain some sense of mystery !! News of that soon (hopefully). As always - be interested to hear your views.
I recently got a new private commission - if you would like to discuss something similar just give me a shout by email

DARK PORTRAIT 3

CLAUDE 09/46 (2009)
acrylic on canvas sheet
15cm x 12 cm
price : £ 16.00 GBP unframed ( see below)
It's been a while. I've been on holiday - and on return discovered I had an ear infection.I was going to paint all sorts of stuff - take photos but my energy levels were next to zero - but now they are improving. This is one of the small paintings I work on in between bigger canvases when I am waiting for them to dry, have hissy fits etc. This picture has the look or suggestion of Claude Makelele - one of my heroes at CFC - hence the name of this piece. Anyway here it is.
This is on sale for £ 16.00 GBP unframed within the UK. If you want it framed - email me to discuss the overall price including postage. Outside of the UK email me to discuss shipping cost.
Email to reserve - first come , first served - PayPal invoice will follow

Some of you may be aware - but for those who aren't - exciting news as I have been asked to produce some large canvases for public display at the Woolwell Centre - a local community and conference venue that has several thousands of people through the door during the course of a year. It's brilliant exposure for me - so thanks to Charlie the manager for giving me the opportunity.

IS IT A FISH ?

KING PRAWN 09/40 (2009) acrylic on canvas
40cm x 40cm
£ 90.00 GBP (p&p inc) see below
Due to some technical difficulties this is one of the paintings bound for the Gallery Guesthouse here in Plymouth - it will be delivered next Monday. Karen asked me to produce paintings with local Plymouth / Devon themes. Hopefully people familiar with Plymouth and the Barbican will recognise this - except "the prawn" as it is known here is actually coppery in colour. I liked the idea of taking the prawn and cooking it - there should be enough here for a few thousand people.
The price for this is as above (outside of the UK we would need to come to agreement for shipping cost) - but I would need to discuss with the guesthouse first as it's going to be part of their new exhibition.

This is one of a handful of paintings I did the week before last - whilst working on my canvases for www.galleryguesthouse.com
The figure is an amalgam of a Germano-Celtic mask (including the pointy head) from around 400 BC and a South Sea island figure painting. I added a shirt and tie and gave it a carnival feel.

I always said I would try to be honest with the images I post here. This painting was done a couple of weekends ago- and it seemed to take me with it - rather than me controlling it. It reminds me of some paintings from Germany and Italy in the 1920s - I'd have to go back and look at some of my books to remind myself. I have just been looking at the original - and I like the vitality. Be interested in anyone else's views.

I am slowly working through a back-catatlogue of some paintings and experiments. This abstracted landscape was done a few months ago following a walk on a beautiful winter morning around Burrator Reservoir on Dartmoor (about 5 miles from my house). It is based on the shapes and colours of the dark coniferous plantation - little glimpses of light showing through - and a wire fence. It's not an attempt to show it for real - just to capture the feel. Not sure if it works totally. Like to hear some views.
This and other work for sale - or - alternatively if you would like to discuss a commission then email me
ps - I am waiting for the confirmation of my PayPal account in the next couple of days. I am going to start pricing my work here - I will then be able to take secure credit and debit card payment via email invoicing. A big leap for me - all part of the process.

Last weekend I did quite a lot of work as experiment for myself. I'll be posting the results over the next few weeks - as I have been offered a small exhibition space at http://www.galleryguesthouse.com/ here in Plymouth - for paintings based on local themes.
I have to work out the layout for the space - and then work on the paintings. I'll keep people updated here and on Twitter.

Back to this piece - black acrylic on white plastic. I started by making regular scrapes with the side of a palette knife and suddenly realised that the images resembled blocks of flats/apartments - so added window type marks and the suggestion of human figures inside with the knife. Then I realised that the end result also felt like discarded celluloid film. Be interested in what you think out there - I like the ambiguity, and to me the picture has an unsettling quality.

If you are interested in buying my work or would like to discuss a comission just email me at

ABSTRACT 09/27 (2009)
acrylic on plasticised paper
14cm x 19cm
price £ 28.00 GBP - (framed inc p&p within UK see below)
Here are the first two works from the weekend just gone. The abstract reminds me of printed 19th century wallpaper ... I think. I love the way acrylic slides around on the smooth surface - before drying rock-hard with lots of lumps and bumps.
"COUNCILLOR" is a larger version. If you would be interested in a commission email me as well. of FACE O9/25 on my previous post. The original coloured pencil sketch was based on a newspaper image of a locally elected official ( I think in the Carribean - can't remember now).I remember he looked a bit stuffed into his suit and tie - he was pushing his way through a crowd - I think someone was holding a poster up on the right. I'm quite pleased with the end result. Always glad to hear what you think.
If you are interested in buying these or a commission - please email me to discuss.
"COUNCILLOR" is priced £ 47.00 GBP (p&p free) unframed
"ABSTRACT" is priced £ 28.00 GBP framed ( p&p included)

If you would like "COUNCILLOR" framed we can discuss additional cost and come to an agreement.

These 3 pictures will have to be my last posting on this blog for a few days as the laptop is going on holiday with my wife and daughter. I will have to resort to public access internet for a few days. I like these - as they are done with the cheapest materials - ie children's coloured pencils from a bargain pack from a local supermarket ( and a cheap fibre tip pen for two of them). It always makes me wince when I see the price of some artists' materials - but I suspect it all adds to the mystique of being an artist. Despite the cost -the vividness of the colour is cracking (in my opinion).

I am quite pleased of the second image - FIGURE 09/25 - as it is the first truly miniature image I have ever really put on this site. I would like to hear your views and opinions.

As always - these and lots of other work on this site is for sale, or alternatively, if you are interested in a commission - just email me

MASK FACE 09/22 (2009)

As promised here are 2 more colour sketches based on my sketches from the source material on African art. I am quite pleased with them as quick works - especially the first one which was done from start to finish on the top deck of a bus travelling into and back from Plymouth.
Not quite sure why the second figure has a collar and tie - just liked the idea of juxtaposing something fairly stylised/abstracted with an everyday detail.
As always would be interested in your comments. This and much of the work on this site is for sale. Alternatively if you would be interested in a commission just email me to discuss.

SKETCH TO IDEA

FACE 09/21 (2009)
gouache and oil-pastel on paper
19cm x 24cm

Last weekend I finished a lot of pencil sketches from a variety of books on African,Oceanic and Celtic art. I used one of the African carved images as the basis for this colour sketch - which I might render as a bigger painting later. I have done a couple of small watercolours as well - which will probably get posted at the weekend.

I am using some of the technique and colour scheme on a large version of my monotype-self portrait ( already on this blog) - which I started today - possibly with a view to entering it into "Artists and Illustrators" annual competiton. More of that later. I'll post the end-result even if I don't submit it. Hope you like this.Views and feedback welcome.

This and lots of my work is for sale. Equally if you would like to discuss a commission - email me initially

TWO EXPERIMENTS

FENCE 09/18 (2009)
acrylic on plasticised paper
21cm x 18cm

SEAFRONT 09/17 (2009)
acrylic on plasticised paper
20cm x 22cm
Two experiments with materials and technique. I'm still a bit miffed - the photo does not do full justice to the colour - (this was my 3rd attempt to get them right) - especially on "Seafront".
As always if you are interested in buying these, others on this site or a commission - just email me to discuss.
Unfortunately these two pieces have "had an accident" and no longer exist - exept digitally. RIP

WATERCOLOUR !!

MOSAIC FACE 09/16 (2009)
watercolour and ink on paper
20cm x 20cm
Haven't really used water-colour for a long time - but was quite pleased with the end result for this. The individual coloured grid with linear figure is directly influenced by Paul Klee.
Interested in your views.
As always this and lots of other work for sale. If you are interested in this or a commission just email me ( googlemail allowing !!)

MOON MASK 09/15 (2009)

FACE 09/14 (2009)

Two new images - both done in the last few weeks.
I am not sure if the mask image is finished or not - which probably means it is.

I'll be posting lots of small pieces this week - and reporting here and on Twitter on a possible piece for the Gallery Guesthouse here in Plymouth.

If you are interested in these, other works on the site or would be interested in a commission just email me to discuss

APOLOGIES

FACE 09/13 (2009)
ink and watercolour crayon on paper
8cm x 10cm
Apologies to all the people who have made such lovely comments on the last few posts - I intend to respond to them all this week. Truth is I haven't been feeling 100% this last week. Here's a new small image to be going on with - I have quite a few others and am aiming to post 2 or 3 times the rest of the week. I've said before here that it's been mooted that all "portraits" have a large element of "self" - well this one could certainly be looked at in that light.
This and lots of my work is for sale - or if you would like to discuss a commission just email me at

PEBBLES 09/12 (2009)
acrylic on canvas
30cm x 30 cm

Finally finished at the weekend - now up on the wall either side of the mantelpiece. Comments welcome. The most satisfying thing about these is that I painted over the top of a couple of cheap B & Q printed canvases - maybe it's the way forward to do away with the mass-produced mindless rubbish out there. ( Any offence to B &Q is ... possibly quite deliberate)

Potentially these are for sale ( like lots of my stuff) but I would like to liaise with Debbie first .

email me about this and other work on this site if you are interested

ps - comments on the last post should be responded to over the coming weekend

PAINTING MYSELF

MONOTYPE SELF-PORTRAIT 09/10 (2009)
Oil pastel and gouache on paper
21cm x 15cm

I was thumbing through a magazine and saw an article on transferred line printing – as used by Paul Klee and in some of Warhol’s early works.

It’s probably not something I’ve thought of doing since I was at school. I had to hand a black and white photocopy of my blog profile photo and off I went.

Not sure about it – but quite like the flat printed , slightly surreal quality of it. I couldn’t resist adding some red lipstick . I could see other applications for this technique which I will probably be experimenting with soon.

If you want me looming on your wall – this is for sale – just email me to discuss.

mydogateart@googlemail.com

On the subject of my two abstracts immediately below I might try to take some photos showing the basic technique I used and post them here soon. Can I also say thank you again for the brilliant response to those two pieces.

ABSTRACT 09/8 (2009)

Experiments out of necessity -I had red and green acrylic to hand - no others - didn't want to wake my daughter up getting any other colours late last Sunday.

Like to hear what you think as always. More work being posted at some point this weekend.

FACE 09/6 (2008)

I might seem obsessed with faces - but I like painting and drawing them as they give me space to work with technique and colour. Interested to hear your views as always.

BLOCKS

BLOCKS 09/5 (2009)
gouache on paper
30cm x 21cm
This was an experiment with gouache and sponge printing - and a bit of hand-tinting ( a nod to Paul Klee ) - we like it so much that it's going in a frame in one of our bedrooms !
I am nearing completion of the two small canvases for my lounge - I'll post them as soon as they are done - I have got some new faces to post as well - so plenty to come in the next week or so.
Much of my work for sale , commissions considered.

NEW YEAR - NEW WORK

UNTITLED 09/1 (2008)
acrylic on canvas
19cm x 25cm
Was going to post this last night - but ... didn't. This is my first experiment with one of my Christmas presents ( extra thick acrylic paints - big tubes of them !) done just before the new year. [Happy 2009 by the way - wherever you are].
They behave a lot more like oil-paints and cover the canvas really densely with first application. Am looking forward to doing some larger works with these.
Always interested in your views.
Most of my work is for sale - just email me to discuss - I will be plunging into the world of PayPal this year by the way.
ps I will be tidying this blog up over the next month - so expect to see some changes - nothing major - it will still look basically the same

a bit more TIDYING UP 2008

As promised here are another 3 images done over the last month or so - some of which may end up as bigger works or are at least good practice pieces. All three are oil-pastel ( which became a popular medium for me) on paper.
FISH (2008)
oil pastel on paper
20cm x 15cm
This is another version of an earlier sketch - I think it is definitely destined to become a large canvas at some point.
FACE (2008)

another mediaeval feel here

FIGURE (2008)

IT'S THE MOON !!

MOONLIGHT 1982

gouache on paper

11.5cm x 8cm

26 years on and this is still a picture I am proud of ... based on the moon over the moors of West Cornwall painted in a kitchen in Sidcup - Kent / SE London (take your choice) - still in a clip frame - I said I would post this in the comments on my last image. The moon looks the same here - it's over Dartmoor instead.
l also thought it was a good image to illustrate my 6 random facts - having been tagged by Peggy Sue - the last couple of days at work have been relentless and I have felt wrung out - so it's taken a little while to respond - but first the "rules"
1) Link to the person who tagged you.
2) Post the rules on your blog.
3) Write six random things about yourself.
4) Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5) Let each person know they've been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
so here are my 6 random facts -

1. the Moon connection - my very earliest memory is standing in my cot - so I reckon I was about 18 months old ( I talked about this with my Mum to try and place it in time) - holding on to the rails - looking out of the window at an enormous full-moon. It's still as vivid in my mind today as ever it was. I still adore the Moon - my daughter seems to be equally obsessive.

2. One of the bloggers on this post - Ivor - was also a friend at school, and I have known him since 1970. In 1978 when we had both been at Uni / Poly for a year we met at my house and we created Sardine Surprise - a tasty snack consisting of Sardines and .... stuff, made memorable by the use of cochineal, which rendered the dish scarlet.

3. I became the youngest ever elected member of Cornwall County Council when I successfully stood for Penzance East ward in 1985.

4. I have been physically removed (by personnel of both the RAF and USAF - it was a double pleasure) whilst I was having a nice sit down on an airbase containing nuclear weapons - I happened to wander on to it with a hundred or so friends out for a country walk.

5. I was one of the 100 'civilian' charity reps in the funeral procession (following the coffin ) of Diana , Princess of Wales - possibly the single most surreal experience of my life.

6. I met my wife Debbie when we were cast members in a community millenium production ( 2000 strangely ) at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth ( 2 weeks run - 1,100 sell-out every night). It was called "Union Street" - I was dressed as a military policeman - Debbie was in a bikini and sarong - and still looks as lovely. When Debbie reads this she will find that very embarassing.

The following six people I have tagged in keeping with the spirit of this game - what they do with it is up to them......

PRIVATE COMMISSION - SOLD

triptych

all acrylic on canvas

all 90cm x 30cm

Delivered this afternoon to a happy customer. Thanks very much to Roger for the commission and the enthusiastic response when he saw them for the first time.

Despite the fact that I have sold watercolours before - that was some time ago - so I was quite nervous taking them along this afternoon - especially because Roger gave me a free hand to do whatever design and concept I wanted, the only stipulation being the dimensions of each canvas.

Roger and I are going to wait a week before we discuss the paintings - looking forward to that

So these aren't for sale - they've gone !!

ABSTRACT SKETCH 2 (2008)
acrylic on plasticised paper
20cm x 14cm

I rescued a load of project file dividers from my desk - they are made of a flimsy plastic material - which I think is paper based, hence my description. It's the same material I used for "RED RIBBON". The shiny impervious surface is quite interesting to play around with - and these two are experiments with acrylic and palette knives that have worked out quite well and stand by themselves. I suppose I see them as sketches / preliminaries for larger works - hence the titles. I'd be interested to find out where I can get bigger sheets of the stuff. I,m particularly fond of "No. 1"

These and many other pieces of my work are for sale.

I am indebted to my wife Debbie for finding this in the back of a kitchen-drawer. I think I did this way back in 1996 - I had it pinned on a board in my office at the time. Somehow it's survived and followed me around. I still rather like it. What do you reckon ?
I have finished my 3 canvases - but in fairness to the person who is parting with their hard-earned cash I am waiting until they have them - before I post pictures here.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT "MY DOG ATE ART" AROUND THE WORLD (2)

With a little bit of luck I will be posting images of my 3 canvases late tonight or tomorrow - however as an interim - just wanted to share a comment I received last week - on this piece - created in 1995 and in my Collage section. It's entitled "Dream Lenin" - hand-coloured collage

"Anything with Lenin in make-up gets my vote. Sheer bloody genius."

I've had loads of brilliant comments - but this one I admit made me laugh out loud.

I'm going to use this on one of my flyers.

So thanks to BingoJimmy from Gibraltar, and it's only fair I point people in his direction.

BUCKLAND BARK 2008

A lot of my time has been taken up with prep work for my canvases - so I had a look back at some recent photos, haven't posted any recently - and thought it would be nice to put this one on the blog - it's the bark of a yew tree - in the grounds of Buckland Abbey the old home of Sir Francis Drake - just up the road from here - I have enhanced the colour slightly (but not much - a little saturation ) - I'm thinking that this will make a nice abstract canvas in acrylic.

IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO THIS WEEKEND

This is another story behind the image interlude - looking at some of the pictures on this site. This image is entitled "They Fade Away Your Mum and Dad".
It is a digital "repeat to fade"rendering of a quick mobile phone capture of an old Kodak instamatic picture on my mantelpiece. I took it 30 years ago in my back-garden in Sidcup, Kent - during the summer holiday back from Polytechnic. It's my Mum and Dad. A shade over 10 years later they were both gone forever. My Mum died 20 years ago this weekend ( 18 months after my Dad ) and I became an "orphan" at 29. It's not a subtle concept - but it captures for me my feeling that people like old photos do fade away and become more difficult to recall and envisage - but also that the grief and sad emotions also fade as we move on. I loved them and they loved me - what more do I need to remember ? Physically I know where they are - washing amongst the toes of holiday-makers in Sennen Cove, where both their ashes were scattered - other than that and apart from in my head and heart - who knows ? Wherever you are - thanks - you were fab.

THE STORY OF NIGHTMAYOR

I am hoping to be posting some new photo-based images over the weekend. In the meantime I thought I would start an occasional series of posts regarding some of the artwork on this blog – mainly concerning any story that might be attached to it.

So I am starting with “Nightmayor” from 1995 – a hand-coloured collage – seen here printed on a t-shirt.

It was made by me when I lived in Penzance. There is a midsummer arts and music festival in the town ( Golowan) where everyone got drunk, made merry and generally took to the streets for about ten days.

In 1995 the mayor of the town was a guy who to put it mildly, somewhat divided opinion locally - and the festival seemed a good opportunity to have some fun at his expense.

In a quiet moment I took a newspaper picture of him – photocopied it , blew it up and hand-coloured the image. The lettering for the caption was Letraset ( those were the days ) and the neon light background was a picture from a magazine. It was A4 size and I took it along to the local copyshop and had it printed on a T-shirt. I wore it out to the pub that night for a laugh , and much to my surprise a few people wanted them. So it was back to the copy-shop with a handful of orders the next day. In the end I think I had about 70 or 80 printed – all sold out – ( I even sold some to a small gallery ) in about 4 days. The weirdest thing was during the festival and for months after I would see strangers wearing the T-shirt in the street, the pubs and cafes. I got the accolade from our local independent monthly paper (Peninsula Voice) of having produced the “funniest T-shirt ever produced locally” .It got local BBC coverage as well.

To be fair to the exalted man himself – the mayor purchased his own t-shirt ( through a third party )

The original image is somewhere in a box in the loft – maybe getting older – whilst the mayor retains a strangely youthful look.
