SKETCH TO IDEA

FACE 09/21 (2009)
gouache and oil-pastel on paper
19cm x 24cm

Last weekend I finished a lot of pencil sketches from a variety of books on African,Oceanic and Celtic art. I used one of the African carved images as the basis for this colour sketch - which I might render as a bigger painting later. I have done a couple of small watercolours as well - which will probably get posted at the weekend.

I am using some of the technique and colour scheme on a large version of my monotype-self portrait ( already on this blog) - which I started today - possibly with a view to entering it into "Artists and Illustrators" annual competiton. More of that later. I'll post the end-result even if I don't submit it. Hope you like this.Views and feedback welcome.

This and lots of my work is for sale. Equally if you would like to discuss a commission - email me initially

  3. Vic and John - thanks to you both - I'm very happy with the colour as well - it does look quite powerful to me - I think the solidity of the mask against the citrus colour accounts for that

    Cheers again, Steve

  8. I truly love the colors in this piece. The flatness of the gouache and texture of the oil pastel really compliment each other.

    Great works!

  9. Many thanks Alsion - I have started work on a bigger version of this in acrylic on board - it's coming along ok - just leaving it for a few days - seems to have a real solidity to it
