PAINTING MYSELF

MONOTYPE SELF-PORTRAIT 09/10 (2009)
Oil pastel and gouache on paper
21cm x 15cm

I was thumbing through a magazine and saw an article on transferred line printing – as used by Paul Klee and in some of Warhol’s early works.

It’s probably not something I’ve thought of doing since I was at school. I had to hand a black and white photocopy of my blog profile photo and off I went.

Not sure about it – but quite like the flat printed , slightly surreal quality of it. I couldn’t resist adding some red lipstick . I could see other applications for this technique which I will probably be experimenting with soon.

If you want me looming on your wall – this is for sale – just email me to discuss.

On the subject of my two abstracts immediately below I might try to take some photos showing the basic technique I used and post them here soon. Can I also say thank you again for the brilliant response to those two pieces.

  1. Hi. In this piece, your stroke look like one of my friend's. See my follower and try to find AMINSAIM. You guys have....about the same style but both have it own identity...

  2. My God, you haven't changed a bit since you were this high! And still wearing the lipstick, I see. I like the unsettling contrast between the simple and optimistic yellow-orange background on the one hand and, er, you on the other hand.

  3. Interesting self portrait, but I think I might manage without you on my wall! LOL

  5. This is absolutely fantastic! Unique, colorful and a brutish edginess, it's perfect. I was going to do a portrait very similar to this because of your avatar but you've outdone anything I could have come up with. Very powerful and wonderfully rendered. If I had the money I most certainly plunk down the cash for it. Maybe once I sell a couple on my end and if it's still available I will! Great job!

  6. This is very effective visually, particularly the placement on the page in addition to the technique that you used. I did notice the red lips right away and wondered about that...it works though...and never fear, one day you will get your own studio...I never thought it would happen for me either but magically, it did. We have some former factory buildings with great raw space in our area in which at this point rent relatively inexpensively...you may have some of those around.

  7. Found Aminsaim - like him - and see what you mean

Ivor - I always favoured black lippy "back in the day" - or don't you remember

Lizzie - yes I am an acquired taste

Sheila - I'm cheaper than you might think - make me an offer ...I might not refuse. I like the brutish/edginess that you picked up on - not something I had noticed

Deric and Rachete - thankyou both

Paula - thanks for the considered comments - though in no way do I think of it as a real portrait I am happy with the composition as well. And thanks for the support - it all means a lot.

  8. I took another drive through, pass through, lookie-loo, muse through, gander, peek at everything again on your blog. I've been inspired, fired up, had my "tude" adjusted, smiled (LOTS) and put my sassy pants back on!

Thanx, Steve, for reminding me to have fun while I'm painting. I'm going to add "Paint a self portrait" to my 101 list. Your work is more than delightful. The world needs you!!! :-)
