SKETCH TO IDEA

FACE 09/21 (2009)
gouache and oil-pastel on paper
19cm x 24cm

Last weekend I finished a lot of pencil sketches from a variety of books on African,Oceanic and Celtic art. I used one of the African carved images as the basis for this colour sketch - which I might render as a bigger painting later. I have done a couple of small watercolours as well - which will probably get posted at the weekend.

I am using some of the technique and colour scheme on a large version of my monotype-self portrait ( already on this blog) - which I started today - possibly with a view to entering it into "Artists and Illustrators" annual competiton. More of that later. I'll post the end-result even if I don't submit it. Hope you like this.Views and feedback welcome.

This and lots of my work is for sale. Equally if you would like to discuss a commission - email me initially

FACE 09/6 (2008)
crayon and gouache on paper

I might seem obsessed with faces - but I like painting and drawing them as they give me space to work with technique and colour. Interested to hear your views as always.

A few more odds and ends from 2008 - the top figure I had intended to use to greet the New Year as it has a certain aspirational feel - or maybe the person looks a bit puzzled ?

a bit more TIDYING UP 2008

As promised here are another 3 images done over the last month or so - some of which may end up as bigger works or are at least good practice pieces. All three are oil-pastel ( which became a popular medium for me) on paper.
FISH (2008)
oil pastel on paper
20cm x 15cm
This is another version of an earlier sketch - I think it is definitely destined to become a large canvas at some point.

Can't decide if this figure is slightly sinister or not - let me know what you think.

A couple more tomorrow night to wave goodbye to 2008.

TIDYING UP 2008

Over the next few days it is my intention to post some odds and ends of small drawings and ideas that I've done over the last month or so.I am currently working on two canvases for my own living room - started them this afternoon in fact - as soon as they are done they will be posted here.
Anyway back to the tidying up -

SKETCH 13/12

SKETCH 13/12 (2008)
mixed-media (gouache and oil-pastel) on paper
20cm x 20cm
This is an attempt to come up with a theme and structure for 2 canvases for my own viewing pleasure - in other words they will be in my lounge. My wife Debbie likes this - so that probably seals it ! I think the underlying theme is beach pebbles. I have loads in my garden.
However - if you want this version in your home - just email me to discuss

not sure about this one - but I always said that I'd be as honest as possible and post stuff even if I wasn't 100%.

THREE 2008

This is a different rendering for a big canvas idea. I like oil-pastel - carry them in your bag - blend colours - very vibrant. You can use solvent to thin them as well. I just use my fingers and nails.
This and lots of my other work is for sale - just email me to discuss

Just after finishing this I thought I must stop watching Shrek films quite so much - there's a passing resemblance.
